The Big Ideas

1. Motivation is a monkey! We have this idea that if we just try harder, we can accomplish anything. It's a bedrock idea of our society, but if we behaviorally want to change it never works— because motivation, by nature, is flimsy and unreliable.

2. Willpower is a finite resource. Also, it relies on motivation, which requires you to use your mental faculties to either convince yourself to do something or talk yourself out of doing something. It’s exhausting. And when it inevitably doesn’t work, you blame yourself.

3. You are not the problem. Your approach to change is. It’s a design flaw—not a personal flaw. Once you remove any hint of judgment, your behavior becomes a science experiment. A sense of exploration and discovery is a prerequisite to success, not just an added bonus. (Use a flashlight, not a hammer!)
