Theory: Create Your WHY

That ideal version of you is pretty much watching you all day every day. The Stoic philosophers called this “the Other.” Modern theologians would call it your conscience.

Back in the day, another name for that highest version of yourself was “daimon”—a sort of inner soul and guiding spirit that exists within each of us.

The old-school philosophers considered your relationship with this inner soul THE most important thing in life. They said that if you want to be happy you need to be on really good terms with your daimon.

In fact, their word for happiness was eudaimōn which literally means “good soul.”

All of this begs the question: How’s your relationship with your inner soul?

And, the most important question for today (and every day): What’s one little thing you can do to move 1 step forward in that relationship today?

The Big Ideas

  1. In Die Empty, Todd Henry tells us to imagine that from the moment we wake up to the moment we go to sleep we have a reporter following us around taking notes on every little thing we do. After tracking our behavior for the day, the reporter goes off and writes a report describing what we did, when, how, etc. That little report they create will serve as the summary of our entire lives—which is a pretty good incentive to make *today* the day to live our deepest values, right?

  2. Have a sense of urgency to create your best life! In the words of Indian philosopher Ramakrishna, "Do not seek illumination unless you seek it as a man whose hair is on fire seeks a pond."

  3. The Art Of Day-Stacking. Small, daily seemingly insignificant optimizations when done consistently over time lead to stunning results. See, world-class isn't about revolution but evolution. Therefore, great mornings lead to great days, great days turn into great months, and great months become incredible years.

  4. In How To Stop Worrying And Starting LivingDale Carnegie urges us to just focus on the day ahead of us. If you are worried about the past you will be depressed, if you are worried about the future that will make you anxious. If you are living right here, right now in the present - you will be at peace.

  5. Focus on the micro-wins done daily, as over time they stack up. Don't focus on the BIG transformations, just focus on the tiny daily triumphs and transformations. And those, when done every day will create momentum that over time will stack into a tsunami of mastery.

  6. And... There is no better time to start.. Other than (you guessed it)... Today :)
