How To Stop The Brain’s Chatter

The brain is perhaps the best example of how something so wonderful can also be so deadly. We all know how powerful the human mind is. It has led to the creation of a civilization that has gone to the Moon and sent robots to Mars. I mean, there has to be something special about it for it to enable achievements like these to happen. In your daily life, it is your brain that helps you make the countless decisions that you need to make.

However, you must have also experienced how your own mind can become your worst enemy. The thing is, the brain LOVES to think. Just as the heart loves to pump blood non-stop. In the case of your brain though, the overuse of its abilities can lead to all sorts of problems. The constant chatter going on inside your skull can lead to huge emotional fluctuations and can create imaginary problems that could result in tangible effects.

So, it's important to know how to stop the brain's incessant chatter for your own mental sanity. Let's take a look at four such ways.

Keep Yourself Busy

I am sure you must have heard the old saying, "An empty mind is the devil's workshop." Well, whoever came up with this quote was a great observer, as it's exactly right! Your brain goes off on all sorts of adventures when you have nothing to do. As I said above, it just loves to think.

So, before it starts creating problems that don't exist or scenarios that will never happen, you should make sure that you have something or the other to do. Take up a new hobby if you have free time on your hands frequently. 

Practice Non-Judgmental Mindfulness

Ok, so these are probably heavy words but let me explain to you what they mean. When you're observing your surrounding, your brain starts forming opinions on what your eyes see. These opinions are based on your internal beliefs and thoughts. Once your brain falls into this cycle, it keeps on thinking one thing after the other. 

But, if you enter a non-judgmental mode of observation, things will not mean anything to you. Anything could happen around you, and you'd still be chill. Yes, I know, that sounds like a zen-master type of capability but it's a great way to silence the brain's chatter.

Take A Nap

I am sure, for a lot of people, this will be their favorite way of dealing with their chatty brains. When you fall into the trap of overthinking, you can do what we all do when our computers become painstakingly slow. We shut them down and restart them. This is what needs to be done with your brain too. 

A short nap reboots your mind and you can start afresh. Sure, it might take some time to nod off after you lie down, but if you have time on your hands, it's one of the best ways to silence the mind as well as replenish your energies.

Start Journaling

You need to understand how your brain works. When it sees a problem, for instance, it immediately kicks into action to find a solution. To do that, it starts running all sorts of simulations. In that way, it is great! However, it can often get lost in its own simulations. This is like a robot getting stuck in an endless loop.

To get out of this loop, you could start journaling. When you write your thoughts down, you actually give an order to your chaotic thoughts. It frees your brain and you may even arrive at solutions quicker this way!

To Wrap Up

Your brain loves to constantly think about something or the other. While it's about positive things, it's okay. But if it leads you down a negative path, you need to control it straight away. There are many ways you can quiet your monkey mind and control it to do things it is actually supposed to do.
