4 Ways To Boost Your Brain Power

brain+power.jpg

The brain is one of the most vital organs of the body, if not the most vital. It is responsible for your thoughts, intelligence, emotions, memory, motor functions, and most other things you can imagine. To lead a happy and successful life, it is critical that your brain functions at an optimal level.

There are several ways you can enhance your brainpower to perform better in various areas of life. And contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to jump through insane hoops to achieve a heightened state of brain function. Just a handful of everyday methods will do just fine. Below are some of the best ones that you can easily incorporate into your daily routine.

1 | Meditation

Meditation is kind of like the Swiss Army knife of mental and physical well-being. Many studies have proved that there are tremendous benefits of meditating on a regular basis. It improves memory, attention span, self-awareness and provides a great deal of clarity that leads to better decision making. It also reduces anxiety, depression, stress, and fights age-related conditions of the brain.

In a world where stress and anxiety have become unavoidable parts of everyday life, meditation is more important than ever. It helps you navigate the countless challenges and roadblocks in life by making you more capable as an individual. Enhanced brain function is just one of the ways meditation makes you a better version of yourself.

2 | A Good Night’s Sleep

Everybody knows and understands how important a good night’s sleep is and yet 51% of the world doesn’t get adequate sleep. This explains the rapid rise of psychological issues worldwide in recent times. The fact of the matter is that the brain needs time to rest.

In fact, studies have found that the brain needs ample sleep to maintain and improve its cognitive capabilities like memory, focus, motor skills, and more. The amount of sleep that a person needs to remain mentally active depends on one person to another. However, experts believe that seven hours is a sweet spot to hit. Doing so will keep your brain younger for longer.

If sleep is something you struggle with, check out my popular article 10 Ways to Get Better Sleep, or my book notes on Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker, PhD. so you are getting the most out of every snore!

3 | Playing Video Games

For the longest time, video games have been seen as a huge waste of time. As we all know, it has become a sort of slogan for parents. But research in recent times has shown that video games can actually boost your brainpower. This is especially the case in children and their still-developing brains. Spending some time on a regular basis playing video games can improve vision-based skills, attention, and certain areas of cognition.

In fact, in studies, it was found that these improvements carry over to real-world performance as well. Children who play video games are often found to do better on specific tests of attention, speed, and multitasking. Of course, even good things need to be done in moderation and the same applies to video games as well. Overdoing might yield negative results.

4 | Learning A Second Language

Learning a second language might not be as easy as some of the other practices mentioned above but it sure is highly effective in boosting your brainpower. Some studies reveal that being bilingual can actually reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. This was noticed when bilingual speakers developed structural changes in those parts of the brain that perform executive functions and attention tasks.

So, it’s a good idea to download an app or two and start learning that second language that you had always wanted to. It might take some time but a little bit of progress every day will eventually help you get there.
